Common Mistakes I Made When I Was Single

Single-life is the most happy, risk taking and enjoyable life that each and everyone of us gone through. Single-life will one day be finished by a new life chapter called marriage-life. In single-life, and as a single person, there were so many mistakes I made. But however, below are some of important and learning mistakes I made when I was single:

1. Spending money I earned for luxurious stuffs: People are like using luxurious and high quality products from house whole products to personal using products such as phones or jewelries. When I was single, I was not on isolated from those group of people either. Everyday, when I woke up, and every weekend when I had free time, I always searched for something that’s premium, without thinking about its price or anything else. If I found something I like, I will do everything to get it.

Those behavior led me to spent almost 80% of monthly income for those not necessary, and sometime, I didn’t even need it.

Technology products including computers, smartphones and tablets were the things that burned my money aways.

2. “Let’s start saving from next month”: Can you imagine that when you want to save your money this month, and you see something interest that you really want, you will say to yourself that “let’s get it, and start saving from next month onwards. This month, let’s just make it for your last overspending month”. But in reality, next month saving, would never happen because next month you’ll need to spend on something else.

I used to experienced that and one thing I can tell you, you’re burning your money and you’re letting yourself into financial crisis one day.

If you wish to saving your money, start doing it today with a proper saving plans. The old said: Spend the money that remain after you saved, and do not save the money that remain after you spent.

3. It is too small for saving: It might be true, because $5 you cannot make any different in your saving account or saving box, but $5 per day times 30 days will make you a surprise. You save $5 a day is much better waiting when you have $50 for saving. Making a different from small little things that would make you a surprise.

Saving money is a myth, and it require patience. Start saving now with your $0.50 unused money.

4. Enjoy life while you can: Most single people always says, let’s enjoy life while you can because when you get married your life will complete different. Exactly what it is. Marriage life is completely different from single life, but however, I still strongly believe that concept is wrong. Start to think and do different even you’re single will make you’re mature when you get married. I used to had that kind of thought, and I almost became a jerk at that time.

5. Single income resource is enough me: When you’re single, you just need to do one job and you can survive without any doubts. I used to think in that way as well. I just need one single job with acceptable income and I can survive in this world, but I was wrong. When price of goods are getting higher and higher, you might need to spend more the same stuff and your money will drain faster than you expected.

Try to get more job and income while you’re single is much better than enjoying your single-life and face many financial problems when you’re married. Get out of that concept and start to think differently.

These are my experiences and I believe some single people might also experienced, or experiencing the same thing I did.

Jurassic World: What I have learned.

Yesterday evening, I and my families we went to see a newest release of Jurassic World, 4th part of Jurassic Park which originally introduced in 1993. The movie was quite good and everyone enjoyed it as much as I did too.

Just like usual, each time I see movies, no matter in the cinema or at home, I tried to learn and picked up some good points from those movies. Today, I would like to share some points that I learned and picked up from last night movie, Jurassic World.

+ Dare to take risk for success: Most people believe that Jurassic World will offer nothing beside excitement and stress release, but those were not just what Jurassic World could offer. Across the movie, you’ll see the main actor dare to risk himself to teach and communicate with his 4 raptors Blue and other three which I didn’t remember the name. Those raptors are predictors and they could kill him with just a single bite. Avoid from afraid those raptors, he taught those raptors and communicate with them successfully. At the end of the movie, those raptors help him to kill the biggest, strongest and cruelest dinosaur that intended to kill all the people in the island. This mean successes come from taking risk for it. Communication also a-two-side knife.

+ Boss is the not the person that we should afraid of: Boss is our higher manager that manage, guide and show us direction to achieve a certain thing including work and life. However, boss also a human beings and we should not be afraid of them. If we have something to clarify or something to ask for help/support, just stand up and ask. In Jurassic World, Owen was the one that step into control center and yell on his boss, Clare, to do something that could protect tourists from harm or getting killed from a dinosaur. Even his boss, yell back on him and asked him to leave the control center, he still wanted his boss to think. In real life, this should be applied but need to modified. We, exactly, should not yell at our boss, but we should stand up and ask them to clarify something that we don’t understand or not clear. Stand up for good.

+ Explore the world to get more experiences: Zach and Gray, two little guys that really enjoy of exploring Jurassic World without any fears or mercy. They were really enjoy of what they were discovered and they learned from it. They even knew how to start-up a 12-year old truck to escape from jack-ass dinosaur. Explore means everything for our everyday life as well as for business. Opportunities out their in the market, we don’t have enough information or deep understanding about it, we’ll be the loser in the field. Keep explore for new opportunities to grow.

+ Should not compromise the risk from internal: What’s that mean anyways? Last night movie show us exactly why we should not compromise the risk that could happened from our internal persons. Vic Hoskins is the security leader but he tried to use raptors in the real field test to prove that they’re safe. During the problem occur in the island, Vic Hoskins tried to release raptors and in contrast, those raptors killed his team. This happened because he never listened to Owen and also just want to prove that he was right. In real world, the closest person in the firm would never also be a good friend. Should not completely trust on anyone otherwise we’ll just like Vic Hoskins’s team.

+ Real leader always at the front line: Owen was so brave and strong enough to lead his team to hunt the killer even though at the night time. He was not afraid of anything even though it was night time. He was the one to ride this bike at the front line and also the one that left after everyone. By compromising his life, his attracted raptors to follow up in order to help his friend in a wooden-whole. Finally he safe those man’s life. Leader is the one that go first, back last. Take risk for his team even it’s life threatening risk.

Learning is not just from books, classroom, but you can learn from anything, anyway you met or experienced with.

Common Mistakes in Running a Business

“No one will work as an employee forever.” This is a short, simple and meaningful statement. Everyone has their own plans either big or small business. Those are long term plan that everyone planned.

However, beside having a good plan for business from location until product lines, there are some common mistakes that most of us have without notice. Those are:

1. “The moment I can sell my products or services, that’s enough.” Business isn’t just about get everyone sold, getting the money and profits from customers. Not so small proportion of Cambodian businessman or businesswoman think that they just get their products or service sold is enough for them. That’s completely wrong, customers are not just coming in, buy their need and they okay, they need something else called, satisfaction. Satisfaction is very important for business, and it’s long-term business source of growth. Once they satisfy with what we provided both quality and service then they will consider to come back and buy more.

2. “Put everything in the store is ready to go.” Have you ever stepped into a store or mart and spend ten minutes to find stuffs that you needed? And sometime you could not find its location in the store or mart? In digital era, people not stupid but also need directions. Put signboard the name of the goods on the shelf would be more helpful for customers to find their stuffs easily and lesser time consume. That also can help to advertise the goods that you’re selling in  your store or mart as well. For example, this morning I went to Tella Mart, I accidentally saw Toyota Oil Filter at the lower bottom of a shelf where I believe super hard to find and see. I was really surprised. If I didn’t accidentally see it, I would never know that they also selling Toyota’s spare parts then. Those issues would be easily solve with just single piece of paper.

3. “Quantity is not as good as value.” Doing business means earning money. The more money you get, the more success you are. But however, with the tough competing market like everyday, high value maybe or maybe not the suitable measurable option anymore. Selling goods with lower price may bring your market-value down if compare to competitors, but in returns you’ll get more in terms of turnover, customers and customer’s satisfactions. For example, if you are selling Avian pure drinking water with a price of $5 per bottle (a 1L bottle) and you can only sell it 20 bottles per day, thus you’ll get $100 per day from Avian 1L bottle sales. But in contrast, you can easily sell 50 bottles of Lyon pure drinking water which priced at $3 per bottle (a 1L per bottle packaging), this means you get $150 from Lyon, higher sales compare to Avian pure drinking water. You see the differences, right? Do not just look into Value, but we should be mindful with Quantity as well. More sales, more money and more growth.

4. “Why I have to share my benefits with my clients?” Currently, with high competing with each other, manufacturers offer plenty of options for their clients, business partners and those come direct benefits that their clients or business partners would get from them. However, their clients and business partners will never share those to their end-users. Why? because they believe that they will lose their benefits as well as their business reputation as well. Those benefits need to be shared through many ways such as discounts, or free-goods.

5. “Just make it done, anything happens will later on solve.” A successful business need to have a good planning and execution as well. Most businesses, especially, family-business here in Cambodia, almost have no business plans, marketing plans as well as long-term vision. They just running their business, once they face obstacles, they will try to solve it. A strong businessman or businesswoman, they can predict the obstacles that would happen along the way and they also prepare a suitable solutions for that. Any business new a good planning.

6. “I and I alone will manage everything.” It is good if  you can do it because it’ll help you reduct much cost on hiring a manager to help you manages all the stuffs in your store, firm or organization. But however, that kind of management will bring you countless headache, messy and unmanageable situation or problems. Empower people and give them authority to manage a certain stuffs would be much helpful and efficient. Do not try to micromanage your firm alone or you’ll be mess-up everything and also by far demotivate your staffs as well.

These are some mistakes that I, during my working experienced it and saw it. I’ve seen so many business model in Cambodia follow these including some well-know family businesses. That should have change.
