Product Manager – a product’s story teller

In pharmaceutical business, product manager plays an important role in  ensuring the product work well, and generate the profit to the company. Product manager is the not only person that will make the brand shine, they also the person that dump the brand’s future as well.

After many years in roles, and years in coaching role, I’ve read, done and seen a lot, both negative and positive results. Today, I’m going to share with you three important elements of being a successful product manager

1. Know yourself:

While knowledge is important, knowing yourself as a product manager is even more important. Many  product managers who have high education and/or knowledge, might not actually bring the future to the brand. Knowing yourself is about your company, your current proposition, your mind and your progression of action . 

2. Knowing your market:

It’s look obvious to handle a brand while you know nothing about its market, it’s like eating an unknown wild fruit. It doesn’t matter what your background hold, or your how high your educate is, those will help you nothing if you rely on it too much.

A successful product manager knows everything about their market from A to Z, both internal and external, their own products and also their competitor’s products.

The opportunity is not actually come from only your product’s strength but more often business opportunity hidden in how well you understand your market situation.

How to really understand the market? Well, it’s quite simple, get your *ss out of your chair and office and get it into the market. 

Only exploring the market, understand how well your competitors are, and how your customer feedbacks are… only by then you’ll see the opportunity and future hold for your brand.

3. Understanding the story behind your brand:

Sitting and reading your brand’s product monograph or product profile is not actually making you become a strong product manager. You need to really understand the story, the rational, and the insight beyond what you see in the papers and product. It’s like a good story teller is not a person who can read or remember the story very well, but it’s about the person who can transform the story in the book into a complete meaning story telling with empathy and emotion.

Be able to tell to you customers the story of your products is very important, and only by that, you’ll success as a product manager.

2017 Life Goal

2016 was such a great year for me – daughter, assets, health and some part of life. However, there were a lot of things that I need to change and fix for 2017.

#1 – Have breakfast regularly

Even though I knew that breakfast is very important for brain, and build up momentum for the rest of the day, but I still could not have it regularly in 2016. Late for work, lost appetite, picky eating behavior were the key that generated that. Sometime, I had some bread, sometime eggs, sometime just only coffee and in result, my health was not good, and I faced my health problem including weak-lean-body.

#2 – Strengthen work-life balance

It was almost a year (2016) that I tried to reduced to bring works to do at home. I tried to spent more time with my little girl and my wife. However, those still a bit far from what I planned, I need to strengthen and reduce it even more. But this year schedule even more lumpy than last year. Let’s see how will I handle it.

#3 – Reduce some stress and smile even more

Smile is the key to build your new day and also the way that you can reduce or cover-up your unhappy things. I tried to smile a lot but I should do it even more.

#4 – Be professional

The past few months, I have done it properly. My dress was not properly iron, don’t have much new dress for work etc. Those are the things that I need to fix it in 2017. Buy some new dress, properly iron during the day… I need to get my professional behavior back, yay!

នឹកណាស់បង នឹកបងខ្លាំងណាស់។ នឹកគ្រប់នូវពាក្យសំដី សម្លេងសើច សម្លេងស្តីបន្ទោសប្អូនៗ សម្លេងហៅក្មួយស្រីឲ្យទៅរៀន សម្លេងរករឿងកូនស្រីៗឲ្យរៀបចំម្ហូបអាហារឲ្យលោកយាយទៅវត្ត និងយកទៅជូនតា សម្លេងដាស់ហៅទៅស្រែ ។ល។ ហើយអ្វីដែលធ្វើឲ្យខ្ញុំចាំមិនភ្លេចគឺសម្លេងដែលបង និយាយខ្សាវៗ ខ្សោយៗបា្រប់ឲ្យជួយមើលថែកូនៗ ក្មួយឲ្យរៀនឲ្យបានចប់ចុងចប់ដើម មើលក្មួយឲ្យបានល្អ និងសម្លេងដែលបងប្រាប់ខ្ញុំថា “កុំទៅណាចោលបងណា អ្នកណាគេទៅណាទៅចុះតែអូនឯងកុំទៅចោលបង”។ ខ្ញុំនៅចាំមិនភ្លេច ហើយក៏គ្មានថ្ងៃបំភ្លេចបានដែរ។

បងអើយ បងដឹងអត់ឥឡូវហ្នឹងកូនស្រីភ្លោះ របស់បងពួកគេបានរៀនចប់ និងមានការងារធ្វើហើយដូចអ្វីដែល បងប្រាថ្នាចង់បានអញ្ចឹង។ ហើយពួកគេក៏មានគ្រួសាររួចហើយដែរណា។ អូ! បងហ្អា បងដឹងទេថាបងមានចៅ ប្រុសម្នាក់ហើយណា។ ចៅគួរឲ្យស្រឡាញ់ និងរួសរាយណាស់ ហើយគេមានឈ្មោះ រតនៈ។ ប្រសិនជាបងនៅមានជីវិតវិញម្លេសបងនឹង ស្រឡាញ់ចៅស្លាប់ហើយព្រោះជាចៅប្រុស ហើយបងក៏ចង់បានកូនប្រុសយូរហើយដែរ តែមិនមាន។ គេឆ្លាត រពើសបន្តិច ហើយចូលចិត្តឲ្យខ្ញុំយកគេជឹះឡានដើរលេងណាស់។ កូនស្រីទី២ របស់បងគេមានគ្រួសារហើយ ជាអ្នកកំពត។ ពួកគេស្រឡាញ់គ្នា និងមានការងារដូចគ្នាដែរ។

បងហ្អា! ឥឡូវហ្នឹងកូនស្រីទី៣ និងស្រីពៅរបស់បង ពួកគេរៀនចប់អស់ហើយ។ កូនស្រីទី៣ របស់បងគេមានការងារធ្វើនៅខាងឯកជន ហើយក៏មានចំណូលអាចចិញ្ចឹមខ្លួនគេបានដែរហើយ។ គេទទួលបានសញ្ញាប័ត្រហើយ តែខ្ញុំសូមទោសផងបង ព្រោះថ្ងៃនោះខ្ញុំមិនបានទៅចូលរួមថ្ងៃពិសេសរបស់ក្មួយ ដោយសារជាន់ថ្ងៃត្រូវប្រជុំ។ អាណិតក្មួយដែរ ដែលត្រូវទៅទទួលសញ្ញាប័ត្រតែ ៣នាក់បងប្អូន។ ចំណែកកូនស្រីពៅរបស់បងវិញ គេទើបតែនិងបញ្ចប់ទេគឺគេរៀនផ្នែកឆ្មប។

បងអើយម៉ែពុកយើងចាស់ៗអស់ហើយ គាត់មិនសូវមានសុខភាពល្អប៉ុន្មានទេ។ បងជួយថែរក្សាម៉ែពុកយើងផងណាបង។ ខ្ញុំនឹកពួកគាត់តែមិនសូវបានទៅលេងញឹកញាប់ទេ ដូចបងធ្លាប់ដឹង ស្រាប់ហើយ រវល់ការងារណាស់បង។

អូ!ភ្លេចប្រាប់បងទៅ ថាខ្ញុំបានកូនស្រីម្នាក់ហើយណាបង។ គេឆ្លាត និងរហ័សរហូនណាស់ គ្រាន់តែមិនសូវធាត់ដូចគេទេ។ បងមានថែមក្មួយស្រីម្នាក់ទៀតហើយ ហេហេ។

បងអើយ! ធ្វើយ៉ាងណាទើបបងប្អូនយើងអាចមានឱកាសជួបគ្នា និយាយគ្នាលេង សើចសប្បាយជាមួយគ្នា ម្តងទៀតទៅបង? យើងមានតែបងប្អូន ៤នាក់ ឥឡូវហ្នឹងបងទៅចោលពួកខ្ញុំទៀត។ ពួកខ្ញុំទាំង ៣នាក់នេះនឹកបងមិនធម្មតាទេ គឺនឹកខ្លាំងណាស់។

ប៉ុណ្ណឹងសិនចុះបងហ្ន៎! ខ្ញុំទៅរៀបចំប្រដាប់ប្រដាងូតទឹកឲ្យកូនសិន ចាំលើកក្រោយយើងនិយាយគ្នាលេងទៀត។ នៅមានរឿងច្រើនណាស់ដែលខ្ញុំចងនិយាយប្រាប់បង។

Medical Representative

There are so many job titles and terms that everyone, every company use differently. Medical Representative or Medrep is a term that we usually use for pharmacists, or medical person who’s working for pharmaceutical company in order to provide product information and knowledge regarding to product prescription.

However, there many people are still misunderstanding about this role. Today, I am writing about role medrep, what they usually do and what they usual thought about.

5 misunderstanding about medreps:

  • Medrep is a seller: medrep mostly confused or misunderstood by medical personels and they also confused themselves that they’re just pharmaceutical product sellers, nothing different from ordinary sell-person. In fact, medrep are much more than just a seller. In some companies, medrep didn’t allow to sell their products directly to medical doctors, or pharmacies. Their roles are just detailing, and providing information. So, in contrast, they’re not 100% sellers.
  • Medrep are not medical persons: this is very common in Cambodia while most of medreps were undervalue or underestimated by medical doctors. Doctors believe, or somehow, assume that medreps have no medical background. I don’t know for sure, but those kind of medrep happened in 1990s, to be exact. Today, almost all of medreps are medical personels, they do have medical background, some are pharmacists, or even doctors.
  • Medreps are always have lower knowledge than medical doctors: this could be true in terms of pathology, diagnosis or treatment diseases, but however, medreps do have a certain knowledge of diseases, guideline and product usage to any product that they related. Doctors might have broad understanding about diseases and treatment protocol/guidelines, but when it comes to a certain drug or medicine, a medrep might knows it clearly.
  • Medrep is a doer: this part is very important for all medreps. Most of the time, they always consider they’re just a doer, no need to think about strategic planning, business objectives or else, because they have their line managers to think about all of this. This might be wrong. When a medrep take full responsibility at a certain area that they’re covering, they like a business manager for that area. They need to develop their own strategies, planning and also business objectives as well. If a medrep do not know how to expand the business, to achieve the goal and do not have a proper plan for business in their area, they will fail and that will close their opportunity for anothe step which is “management” step.
  • Leadership for medrep is not important: this myth is very obvious and it is very ridiculous. I do believe that leadership is not for everyone, but however, a successful medrep they do have very strong leadership. Leadership is verything we need to know about ourselves, people and lead them. Everyone need to have a strong leadership foundation in order to apply for another step of their career.

These 5 misunderstanding about medreps that I mentioned above are just a small of part of thousand of misunderstanding about medreps and more importantly medreps should have better recognation that just from company but from medical doctors point of view as well.

Last but not least, be strong, be smart and humble.

You can define your future by asking yourself these WH questions.

Where? – Where do you want yourself to go? If you want to achieve your goal, where will you find it?

When? – When will you want yourself to achieve? When will you start action to achieve your goal?

How? – How to achieve it? How you can achieve your future goal?

What? – What to do to achieve it? What support you would need?

Who? – You do it yourself or supports from other? Who will be your consultant? Who will be your partner?

Why? – Why you want to achieve it? Why you need those where, when, how, what?

“Snack” and “Snake” – Most Common Mispronounce

The word “snack” and “snake” are the most common mispronounce words among Cambodian people, even some journalists of some TV channel. Let’s make this right from wrong together.

  1. “SNAKE” [snāk] – (n) a long limbless reptile that has no eyelids, a short tail,          and jaws that are capable of considerable extension. Some snakes have a venomous bite.
  2. “SNACK” [snak]– (n) a small amount of food eaten between meals.

Why We Are Still Poor?

Poor is the result of our actions. Those actions including:

  1. Laziness
  2. No Creativities to optimize our own resources
  3. No proper saving plan
  4. Over spent
  5. Have only one income resource
  6. Addicted to own or buys new things which we are not actually need
  7. Eating out

There are still many more behavior that we do it everyday that we don’t even realize that it’d make us POOR.
